Submissions for the 2012 IndieCade Independent games contest are now open. IndieCade is one of the biggest annual Indie games contests. Submissions are being accepted through May 1st. Submissions can be sent in as late as May 15th for an additional processing fee. If you want to submit your game you can do that here, and if you need more info you can check out the FAQ here.

Hollow Grounds is a game about a planet that rotates itself so the tiny cartographer Piri doesn’t hurt himself. It’s for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It was made by Jeremy Spillmann and Michel Barengo. The game will be released on 16th of January 2011.

The next Gundam project announced is the anime-adaptation of The Origin manga that concludes in the latest (August) issue of Gundam Ace. The Origin is a retelling of the original Mobile Suit Gundam that began and has been running since 2001. The announcement and the conclusion of The Origin also celebrates the 10th anniversary of Gundam Ace magazine and the manga. The end of The Origin also introduces a new Gundam manga, “Mobile Suit Gundam Z DeFine“, a retelling of Zeta Gundam.

It’s been a nice month of relaxation for both Glen and myself but it’s time to get back to it. We’ve got some cool things planned for the sites in the coming months. We are still going to have videos but maybe not the monthly all in one video. Right now we are planning on releasing more videos each month but they will be shorter and more subject specific. We also would like to announce that we have a new blog author, his name is Bob so look forward to some posts from him. I can honestly say it was a nice break but it’s good to be back.

That’s the trailer for Space Captain McCallery Episode 2, there are 3 episodes in all. The games look like a throwback to old Nintendo graphics to me and that’s probably what piques my interest so much in them. While I have not yet played them (even after promising the developer I would T_T), they remind me of Adventures of Dino Riki (which I owned as a kid and loved and hated at the same time) for some reason. They are classic “arcade shooters” and look rather fun. You can also Donate to Ultimate Nerds if you want to help out.

Space Captain McCallery Episode 1, 2 and 3 are all freeware, and you can get them from Ultimate Nerds.

Ok so this game is one that I’ve wanted to do for an Armor Games pick for some time, but there have been some other good games too. It’s not the absolute best flash game I’ve played, but I seem to go back to play more of it and try to get farther in the game a lot. The game is based on a rogue-like RPG, Elona. What is it? Well, simply put, it’s a shooter. Your main goals are to gain money, level up, and survive all the days (if there is an end). This game is actually rather in-depth, and has the option for some moral choices as well. While I’m no fan of things like “robbing” people, you have the option of doing so in this game if you really need money, I for one do not rob even in this game. If you’re into click shooters, this is one to check out. I’ll warn you though, it can get rather hard.

We originally made our videos small to accomodate people in 1024×768 screen resolution, but now we can have our videos and images scaled up quite a bit.

First off, E3 goers and streamers alike have already seen the new Nintendo console. I am one such person, although I had to wait till I came back from work to watch it. For those who have not seen the press conference, you can view it on their website here. Any stuff mentioned here (other than the rumor page posted) is backed by the presentation, if you want the full actual news, watch the presentation.

As for those who want a quick look at the new console’s trailer, here it is:

As I watched the trailer and unveiling of the new Wii U controller, I was filled with a sense of awe. I love it, and what I love more is the fact that you can use Nintendo Wii controllers with it just fine, and play all your old Wii games (if the announcement is to believed). The controller alone is like a console, but seems to need the console to actually run. The idea of combining mobile gaming with traditional console gaming is awesome in my opinion. I think Nintendo has redefined gaming yet again, and with bold statements such as *rumor alert*it being more powerful than the 360 and the PS3, it would easily jump to first place.

But before you naysayers throw down my assumptions, just remember that it is thanks to Nintendo that the “motion controlling” technology has taken off so much lately, and the PS Move is almost a direct ripoff, with a combination of the Wii-mote and the PS EyeToy technology and the Kinect being a juiced up version of PS EyeToy technology.

All in all, the new console surprised me big time and I’m looking for some really great stuff in what I think will be the step back forward for Nintendo. Oh and by the way, some game developing/publishing giants are on board, namely EA. I look forward to seeing games like Batman Arkham City on a Wii U next year.

I know that I originally started this as a monthly thing, but…well…bi-monthly isn’t too bad now is it? The second Armor Games pick this month is Shell Shock Live. This game is an “artillery game” done in the style of games such as Worms. The game is a pretty cool idea, it’s online. When you score hits on other players you gain experience and level your tank up. You then acquire new weapons for use as you level up, so the better you play, the more weapons you get. This game is pretty sweet, and I highly recommend trying it out. If you like the Worms games or other “artillery” style games, you will definitely like Shell Shock Live.

Jackson Lewis sent us an email recently about his game Ball on a Wall. I have to say it’s an interesting idea for a puzzle game. The demo is available in flash. Here’s some info on the game from the game’s website:

“Don’t let the ball fall off the wall.

A fiendish new game from Jackson Lewis at SmallGreenHill.com, your goal in Ball on a wall is to guide a ball to a pickup by sliding a grid of cubes in and out of a wall. If you’re too slow and miss the pickup, it explodes and destroys part of the wall, making getting the pickup more difficult in subsequent rounds. As you progress, the game gets faster and trickier elements are introduced, like locks that prevent you from sliding out parts of the wall.
Up till now, SmallGreenHill has been known as a producer of character driven platform games and Ball on a Wall certainly has elements of a platform game. But it’s also akin to casual classics like Tetris and Bejewelled because it shuts out all other rational thought and puts the player in a hypnotic trance lasting days. The guys over at Illusionware games sent us a tip of their game Roll hamster, roll. It’s a puzzle game in which you try to acquire the peanut by rotating around objects and rotating the objects themselves.

Game description:

An innovative puzzle game about a hamster

Get the peanut by rotating and moving around different figures, solve the puzzles, have fun an conquer the leaderboards.

Innovative gameplay, 30 levels, and a whole lot of fun.

Controls:

Right and Left arrows move the hamster clockwise and counter-clockwise
Down arrow to stick the hamster to the figure.
R to restart the game.

In the inter-level menu you can navigate with the arrow keys:

It’s official! Half-Life 2: Episode 3 is coming to PC before the end of the year. According to Value the game will be out for the 2011 Holiday season. Taking a cue from their past games like Left 4 Dead, the new game will not only be coop only but an MMO. This is really cool news I can’t wait to play this game!!! Illusionware games just contacted me about their new game, Gravital Rescue, which I in turn checked out. The game is a mix of moon lander and gravity based games. Let me say this; there is no “I might die”…you will die. Fortunately the game doesn’t punish you harshly for dying, the points just go away while you are playing and sometimes it might be faster to just die than try to recover from your actions. If you are a fan of moon lander games you will probably like this one too. Check it out.

Well I just rewatched Paprika recently and was looking for the soundtrack, when I stumbled upon an unusual fact. Two songs that were in the movie were supposed to be free instead of you having to pay for them on the soundtrack.

I got sent an email from Indie Game Mag and here is what it said.

The Indie Game Mag recently purchased GameTunnel, one of the first websites to cover indie and casual games. It’s a pretty cool little game, and I spent a few minutes playing around with it. The game does some cool looking simulation, especially since it’s all cubed water, and it does look pretty good with the classic Infiniminer style that most people attribute to MineCraft. The game looks pretty good, although the interface can be a little difficult to read here and there. While I didn’t do a whole lot I do have to say the game is a pretty cool little sandbox style game, and it’ll waste some of your time. Recommended? Yes.

Well for one thing it means that I have been working hours and hours to get the stuff transferred, but after all that time, we are now converted over to a new host. This means we are now using php and mysql 5 and that even though it seems that everything is just as it was before…it means I still have a bit of work ahead of me to fully finish all of our server changes, not to mention that we will be updating our emails and things like that so bear with us until we finish it all. I’ll post an update when the server changes are all done.

If you have registered for this blog in the last day or two check to make sure that you are still registered and that any of your information is still intact, if not please update it if you can.

If you send us emails during the next couple of days or so we will try to respond like normal, but do expect our emails to possibly go down at one time until we finish updating them to our new server.

So, long story short (too late), we’re on a new server and that means that some things may be broken here and there that we haven’t checked out yet. If you find something email us.

GarageGames is back. After GarageGames was absorbed into InstantAction some time back then some problems befell the company just a few months ago. InstantAction had to close their doors and the Future of the Torque Engine was questionable. Now Torque is returning with the company now being GarageGames again. Eric Priesz, the current CEO of GarageGames, posted up a blog about the news, here is an excerpt:

“You’ve been patiently waiting and the time has come. GarageGames is back! We’ve changed our name back to GarageGames and we are dropping the prices on all products to $99.00 to celebrate our new direction and return to our indie roots. It’s been a storied ten years for the GarageGames name and we are looking forward to ushering in the next decade.

The return of GarageGames is much more than a $99 price point. It’s a commitment to the community who grew with us over the years. It’s a return to the values that brought people together to make great games without the burden of unbearable pricing or royalties. Our community is a diverse group of people who are willing and able to help each other grow as game developers and we can’t wait to take that community to the next level…”

Ok what was that about $99? Well GarageGames has now dropped all their products to $99 as a celebration for the return of GarageGames. Whether the prices will stay at that or not has yet to be seen, but to read the full blog check the source link below.

The first about the challenges of wearing multiple hats as well as some PR-related stuff.  Essentially, many indie developers seem to struggle with balancing the business side of their work with the game-development side of their work.  I know I do, and this post breaks down some of why this might be, as well as reasons and goals for overcoming these challenges.

Case in point: by any objective measure, I really messed up the PR for the release of Tidalis.  We had far too little PR, and now that awesome reviews are coming in it’s still too late for the actual launch of the game.  This has led to sales being about ten times lower than my minimum expectation for the game, even though the game has still been very successful compared to most indie games in its first two weeks.  It certainly beats the pants off of what AI War did at first, and AI War went on to sell around 30,000 copies of itself and its expansion.

So what does that mean for Tidalis?  Is it to be permanently harmed due to the lack of advanced press before initial release?  Short answer: No.  That certainly wasn’t the case for AI War, and the reviews are even more positive for Tidalis than they were for AI War.  Longer answer: I wrote a second article about the secrets of Arcen’s success as an indie company, which outlines how we took AI War from a complete unknown to a cult classic.  It’s worked for us, I suspect this is what worked for Dwarf Fortress, and I know this is what worked for the likes of Doodle Jump and similar on the iPhone.  And best of all, it’s the sort of thing that big companies by and large would never do for their customers.
